Do you ever wonder how strong and ideal your engine parts are?

Here at Co-ordSport we sell a wide range of vehicle components, for a large range of vehicles, those cars being used for all sorts of different activities. We try to stock and promote the best quality parts, offering the best value, at various levels, for differing requirements and budgets. Amongst those are JE Pistons, K1 Technologies and Wiseco pistons, which are all part of the Performance Motorsport (PMI) Group, a subsidiary of Dover Corporation, which encompasses many highly specialized companies in the field of motorsport engine components.

One of our very experienced specialist engine builder customers (a customer of and supplier to Co-ordSport for over 20 years!) recently built an Evo engine for rally use overseas, utilising Wiseco 1400HD pistons and K1T con-rods, the parts being supplied by ourselves. The engine produced good torque and power, but as is often the case, the driver/team constantly searched for some more extra advantage. They later fitted some lightweight pullies, and it is thought this may have affected the harmonics of the engine (whilst there can be advantages with less drag on an engine, you always have to consider that flywheels and pullies need a certain amount of weight to keep an engine smooth). Unfortunately, the block cracked, which allowed fluids into a cylinder and it is likely that this caused the engine to “hydraulic” (the upward bound piston, compressed the fluid in the cylinder/head chamber) and you can see below what happened to the con-rod and the piston.

It should be noted that the con-rod merely bent, and did not break and the piston also remained intact. Which has to be testament to the strength of these well known components/brands. Amazingly, the engine kept running and the team at first just thought it was merely over-heating due to a head gasket problem! But then we all know how strong that Mitsubishi 4G63 engine is – what a great design by MMC, parts for that engine are still amongst our best sellers! It’s legendary!
