We often get asked if the 5 and 6 speed clutches for Lancer Evolutions are inter-changeable. The OE parts are quite different part No’s and the discs are quite different in appearance, with the 6 speed disc having much bigger springs than the 5 speed version (we used E9 GT 5 speed disc MN132206 for these images – that is the latest/best disc available for the E7/9 5 speed cars). We’re getting more and more requests for winter wheels and tyres to fit Evos and in particular to fit over their big brakes. It’s not a problem though, as our good friends at Compomotive have wheels that will fit and clear the Brembo brakes – 16″ (x5, 5.5 or 6.0) for Evo 5~9 and 17″x7.0 to clear the Evo X’s standard brakes. We can also supply winter tyres too. Our friends in Germany have to fit winter tyres, or they can have problems with insurance or in case of a collision. If we keep getting winters like this year and last, maybe we should all start to think about having 2 x sets of wheels & tyres. One of our dealers in Germany offers a Wheel/Tyre Hotel service, with racks and racks up to the rafters of wheel/tyre sets, dutifully stored and exchanged with the seasons!
Evo 5~9, OE is 225/45R17, so aim for 205/55R16 on a 16×6.0/6.5/7.0
Evo X, OE is 245/40R18, so aim for 225/50R17 on 17×7.0
Demand of wheels and tyres has been very high, so not always available next day, can be 7~14 days.
Remember the winter tyres are not just for snow, they are beneficial all winter, especially when the temperatures drop below +7°C, when their higher rubber content offers much better grip than summer tyres. But they still struggle on ice – then you need studs, ideally!
