CSCC Co-ordSport Anglesey Report

The Co-ordSport Tin Tops headed to Anglesey for a double header race meeting last month with grids of 30+ cars for each race, the drivers and spectators would not be disappointed.

The rain managed to stay away for both races, much to the relief of the assembled grids. For race one the pole sitter, Nigel Ainge, managed to stall the Honda Integra and for a very few anxious seconds the rest of the grid managed to miss the stricken Honda before he resumed at the back of the grid. Colin Simpson took the lead in the ever quick Peugeot 206 but with different lines taken by front and rear wheel drive cars, was unfortunately pushed into a spin at the hairpin by the BMW of Chris Boardmam, with Tom Mensley in the Renault Clio making the most of the drama, taking the lead and pulling out a comfortable margin.

There was more misfortune for Ainge and the Inegra when a gear selection problem ended his race early. The Peugeot 106 of Wheatley and Allen was making good ground through the pack having started 24th, moving up to 15th position overall. The other Peugeot of previous race winner Martin Addison was not having an ideal day, with a loose relay ending his charge at the front end of the field and sidelining the Peugeot until the next day. Colin Simpson had swapped to his son Steve, who was now on the charge, closing in on the lead group, setting the fastest lap times in the process and by the end he had fought to a very commendable 2nd overall. The Honda Civic of Blair Roebuck had an excellent run to 5th overall and the hard work he has put into the preparation of the car was now paying off, but it was the Clio of Tom Mensley that led the whole field to the chequered flag to take the overall win.

Race 2 on the Sunday was described by the circuit commentator Dave Goddard as the most exiting race that he has commentated on this year. With previous race winner Martin Addison and the Integra of Ainge/Cassar starting at the back of the grid, the race was all set to be an exciting one and we were not dissapointed.

Addison and Ainge/Cassar flew through the field, setting fastest lap after fastest lap to catch the lead BMW, but the time was running out, and at the flag Addison was less than half a second behind Boardman/Moulton-Smith, with Ainge/Cassar up to 3rd overall. However post race the BMW was given a 5 second time penalty for exceeding track limits and the win was awarded to a very happy Martin Addison who has started the race on the very last row.
