Wiseco Pistons – Engine Building Practices You need to know!

If you’re building an engine, there are some practices you simply must know. We’ve compiled them here and will continue to add additional engine building tips, tricks, and techniques as we publish them. This is one for the bookmark bar.

Assembling an engine isn’t easy work, and it certainly comes with a high-cost of failure. Spinning a $5 bearing can result in a few hundred dollars of parts and machine shop costs. A single, improperly gapped piston ring can cost several horsepower and inadequate piston to valve clearance––we don’t even want to think about that one.

The moral of the story is: It pays to do your homework before assembling an engine. Hindsight is 20:20, and it’s really easy to spot the problem once there’s a hole in your cylinder block. At Wiseco, we want you to have the best possible experience, not only driving the engine, but also building it. To help make that process safer, easier, and perfect–the first time–we’ve begun to compile some expertly written How To’s, posted here on our blog. In addition to fresh weekly blog content including race coverage, feature cars, and product news, these How To’s seek to inform, protect, and better all of our customer’s engine projects. We will continue to add to the list below, providing even more great, technical information for your engine-building benefit.

How to File Fit Piston Rings

Gapping and correctly installing piston rings is one of the most important parts of engine assembly. For a full walk through on how to do it click HERE.

 Piston to Wall Clearance Explained

Piston-to-wall clearance is a crucial measurement for any engine, and different applications can require wildly different specs. We explain the science of why HERE.
